Fray-Adjacent

Xander's got an e-mail home open, half-written, as he lounges on the couch with the laptop. Oddly, it's not to Willow, this time - not that it's always to her, but she tends to get the bulk of them due to BFF privileges.

This time, though, it's to the other best friend.

Dear Buffy: So I met Bridge's parents. His mom pulled a knife on me. Good times. I'm not in tiny card jail, though, which I think I'm supposed to take as a sign that they like me. In other news, mini-Fandom-Andrew got the lead in the school play. I'm not sure if I should warn him about possible fairy possession or warn the school about possible monkey-demons. I'm not sure this school would even notice possible monkey-demons; it's not like we did. 64,000$ question: What if Angel'd still been evil after he got the soul back? What would you have done? Except you did, when you killed him, so I guess I'm asking what should I have done to hel---

If you think, given how close that gets to mentioning things he's never mentioned, that this letter's going nowhere fast, you're not wrong.

It's dark when they step out of the portal. Of course, it was dark when they had stepped into the portal in the first place, so it doesn't immediately occur to Bridge that something may have gone a bit wrong.

The location of the exit portal is, at least, convenient. Right on his parents' doorstep. He gives Xander what he *hopes* is a reassuring smile before knocking on the door.

Having spent the night camping on the beach out of reach of both radio and announcements (but not pteranodons disguised as albatrosses), Xander and Bridge ended up tucked away in Xander's apartment tonight not to avoid the now-testy prehistoric-types, but just because sometimes walls are your friend. And roofs. And cable. And popcorn.

So now they're enjoying an all-night marathon of Bitterwoman : the Season Where It All Went To Hell. Hey, popcorn is good for more than just eating, you know...

Xander's cooking. Real cooking, not even pasta. Cooking with meat and veggies and something that passes for gravy. It's not really taking his mind off what he learned today, but it's letting him concentrate on something with set steps, instructions he has to follow. It's almost like work in that respect but he's less familiar with the process, and that helps today. Lets him only dwell on it in slow minutes while he's waiting for the potatoes to boil, how easy it is to take it for granted, even now. What he got back, the chance to spend time with with people he cares about, people he thought he'd lost. People - or at least one person - that he really needs to talk to, now.

Well, ok, Xander is staring at the screen with his finger poised over the delete key. But that's sort of like typing, right?

Xander led the way into the house, pointing out a couple of new features as he waited for one of its owners to follow. "Deadbolt's brass, but it's got a silver base. Those take protection spells well, at least according to my BFF."

So you'd think with the day off from the construction site, Xander would be able to have a nice relaxing time - sleep in, kick back, put the cell on silent, watch some tv, right? Well, it had started that way. Then he checked his voicemail.

First there was a prank-call from Mel, which he had to admit got him for a second. Then one from a complete stranger asking to partake of his skills in girl-talk. Which was... sort of a compliment, he guessed?

Then the offer of not-in-public OMGWTFNO from that wizard kid, which he had to call Bridge about becausesdkj see OMGWTFNO, then the bowling invite which was actually nice, even if he didn't recognise the voice. Maybe Dawn would fill him in on who it was, since he passed it on to her. Then Isabel asking if he wanted some Gatorade, which again, nice, if random. Not that she'd ever come over with it after he called her back.

Just when he'd thought they were getting less weird, there was the call from the kid who captured his twinkie (*) which was less of the OMGWTFNO and more of the WOW HI AWKWARD and FLAIL but also aww, and he had to think about his reply for a while before he knew what to say.

And then bang zoom, straight into the OMGWTFWTFWTF with a message from Bridge, and no answer when he tried to call back to find out what was going on.

And then there was what was clearly a wrong number from Peter but added worries about his BFF's relationship to Xander's concern about his own, and following that....

Well, following that was the Mountie who clearly got hit on the head by an I-beam this morning which left Xander feeling guilty about not being at the site, and following that was the one that is responsible for Xander's current state of staring in wide-eyed horror at his phone - because THAT is so not Bridge. Not that he doesn't kind of wish Bridge would call him and say something like that, but it's NOT, so... asdfghjkl!

Earlier, there was a call to Parker whose topics included cleaning, construction and missing Fandom. Also, certain plans for this evening.

Now, there is pasta bubbling on the stove and a Xander in the kitchen. Yes, despite the fact that the apartment came with a food replicator; it's a thing. A certain plans for this evening thing. A "two months ago we weren't a thing and now we're a thing again" thing.
