Right, this wouldn't be Xander pacing around, worrying about Bridge and Z and cursing the lack of new news, in between poking verrrrry carefully at the old news in his in-box in case something jumps out and bites him. Which hey, Fandom, always a possibility.

He was also hoping he might hear from somebody who'd be likely to understand how completely fraxx0red his brain was right about now.

Xander shook his head. "I'm not a Watcher; I just work for the Council." Which was a phrase that had worn its own grooves in his mouth from the number of times he'd had to give it. "I do recruiting runs for new Slayers, but not the long-term Gilesy partners-in-crime stuff."

Willow eeked. "New Slayers??"

Oh God, something else he'd been saying for so long that the OMGWTF of it for her hadn't even entered his head. "No, no, Buffy's fine," he said quickly. "She's in charge of them. Things got a little weird, and it's not exactly one girl in every generation, anymore."

Willow stared at him. "Okay, I realize that someone who may have looked an awful lot like me used to kid about drowning Faith and bringing her back to life a few dozen times so that Buffy could occasionally take a vacation, but we're all on board for how that's not actually a workable plan, right?"

Xander winced at the accidental near-accuracy, and wondered not for the first time how much about Faith he should say.

"Actually, it's a spell. Pretty huge thing: woke up all the girls who could be Slayers, instead of having to wait for somebody to die." Even if somebody -- more than one somebody - had, it hadn't happened directly because of that.

"Oh." Willow pondered all the implications of that. "That's kind of neat, if possibly confusing for all those girls who don't understand why they suddenly don't need help getting jars open."

Xander nodded. "Yeah, it's not all sunshine and weetiny snowmonsters in bunny suits. We wouldn't have done it if we hadn't hit the Apocalypse that eats other Apocalypses for breakfast. See above re: vampire army."

"A Slayer army does make sense then," Willow agreed. "Actually it would've made sense a long time ago but nobody asked me to cast a deciding vote on whether the whole 'one girl in all the world' concept was dumber than trusting Spike with the remote control."

Xander snorted. "Yeah. So we're still finding them all. I mean we know where they are, but there's thousands of them, and only so many of us. We're not going around with tranq-guns and a dog-catcher van; it's an offer you can refuse, now."

"I can't imagine how any of them would," Willow said. "Actually I can but I like imagining that I'm in a world where everybody is good and noble."

"Well, they're kids, Xander pointed out. "They deserve a chance to be kids. Buffy deserved a chance to be a kid; she just didn't get it. Now there's enough of them that they can."

"That's very neat of us," Willow said. "So is that why you're in Fandom? Going to put up 'Slayer Army Wants YOU! (Assuming you're female and good at hunting vampires and demons and don't mind learning the plural of Apocalypse, ask your doctor before starting any new Slayer programs, offer not valid in Tennessee)' signs?"

"The offer's totally valid in Tennessee," Xander answered immediately. "Also, sort of, yeah, but less with the signs. More with the 'Slayer Army knows who you are, please don't freak out, you don't have to come with me if you don't want to but we've got a really good dental plan and if you change your mind after we teach you how not to wake up dead that's fine too hi my name's Xander, wanna get in my car and take a ride not dirty?"

"...you own a car now?"

"....well, no. I mean I do, but it's somewhere under where Powell Street used to be." Xander shrugged. "I mostly rent now, since I fly so much."

Xander blinked slowly at her. "Yes. In a long metal tube with chairs inside it and flat things that stick out on either side."

"...you can fly if you're inside one of Sunnydale's sewer drains?"

"...sadly despite my years of intense research and experimentation I still lack sewer-related superpowers and have to use planes like mere mortals." Which made him think of what he'd learned last night, why he was sitting around waiting for a call, and he realized he didn't even know if she knew. "Crap. Did anybody tell you about Bridge and Z?"

Willow nodded. "I was going to ask you the same question, only with more of a Bridge emphasis for obvious reasons."

"Parker called, and then there was a meeting last night." Xander gave her a dry laugh. "Xander Harris: Master of Timing, huh."

"Maybe you came back now so you could help," Willow pointed out.

"I thought about that," he admitted. "I mean that's not why the Council's springing for the hotel room - they sent me to find a new Slayer. But nobody was expecting her to be here."

Willow's mind went to the first obvious place. "But you already knew there was a new Buffy here."

"There wasn't a here here until yesterday. Or maybe the night before." Xander shook his head. "But I don't think it's Buffy. The spell was showing her too, I think, but kind of fuzzy because it didn't know how to deal with the idea of two of her."
