SPD Earth, Bridge and Xander's Quarters, 2023

When you're living in the future with no job to speak of and not much to do but watch tv with alien subtitles and answer e-mails from your fellow alumni, shockingly enough there's plenty of time for things like preparing an anniversary dinner.

Not that he didn't know that traditionally one month was like the Kleenex Anniversary or something, but dude. He was a Harris. Well, an ex-Harris. One month without even threats of divorce or flying crockery was probably a new world record for his family.

And thus there was Chinese food, because it was something not made by a synthesizer, it was something he could walk in off the street and order without being afraid humans couldn't actually digest it, and oh yeah -- it was what they'd eaten on their first date.

"Easy for you to say," Bridge says, letting himself be tugged. "You're not the one with a face resembling a tomato."

"I could be, if I eat enough of the hot ginger chicken?"

Bridge laughs. "That's one way to go about it. Since I don't think *I* could make you blush the way you do to me."

"That sounds like a challenge, to me."

"So if I'm betting I can't, does that mean you're betting I *can*?" Somehow that seemed a bit... mixed up.

"...Sure! It's not like I can blush on command. Unlike some people."

"I wouldn't call it *on command*," Bridge says, flustered.

"Okay, maybe no. Still, it's not like I can cheat and win by making myself blush. Unless I raid Syd's makeup case."

"...Yeah, no, I like you better alive, thank you."

"I'm intrigued that your first concern is for my health and not that I'd be, you know. Wearing makeup." Ignoring the part where he knows damn well his badass vampire self had been all about the eyeliner, because that doesn't count.

"I love you, and that means fully supporting any lifestyle choices you may make," Bridge says straight-faced.

"I appreciate that," Xander replies, though his grin gets a little twisty after a second. "Somebody's got to and it sure as hell isn't me lately."

"No, but thanks for having that covered too. Support our lifestyle, I mean."

"Oh," Bridge says, absently fiddling with his chopsticks. "Right. That whole thing with me dragging you off from someplace where you *had* a job to someplace where you don't."

Xander shrugs. "Anybody can rent out apartments and fix roofs. Save the earth from evil aliens is a little more specialized."

"You can fix more than just roofs, though," Bridge says, an idea beginning to form.

Xander reaches for something he really hopes is Kung Pao chicken. "Yeah, but contracting experience fifteen years ago in another dimension isn't really worth the paper my three quarters of a degree isn't printed on. I don't have the qualifications to qualify for the jobs I'm qualified for."

"You've lived here for a month now," Bridge says. "You've *seen* what happens during a zord fight, right?"

"Sure." He nods. "Destruction on the same level as three Slayers loose in a mega-mall with somebody else's gold card."

"Do the Slayers have to fill out forms in triplicate after?"

"Willow's do."

"That's.... okay, actually entirely unsurprising," Bridge muses.

"So you think I could get a job making people fill out forms?" Xander asks, poking at a pile of rice with his chopsticks. "Me not habloing Sirian's been an issue with the stuff I've applied for so far."
