Xander's in the kitchen, being thinky. And cooking. Which mostly consists of poking at the food synthesizer to see what wacky-but-still-edible things he can get it to make, since he knows better than to trust himself with an actual stovetop while engaging in thinkiness.

It's not bad thinkiness, necessarily - despite the construction project being over, and the last week of it being tainted with Umbridge-related nastiness, they had put the school back together. And Umbridge was gone. Resoundingly, loudly gone. Yay.

But other people are going to be gone too, which less with the yay. And, well. Thinky.

"Don't mind if I do," Bridge says, completely missing any other interpretation of the phrase.

"Me neither. The worst you can do is break it, and then I'd just have to borrow yours."

"I'd make you a new one," Bridge says. Not that he's ever actually built one himself, but he's fairly sure he could reverse engineer it.

This would be a bad, bad time to pick up on the mostly-unintentional double entendre.

"If you made me a food machine, what would it end up making with its extra bonus button? Books?"

"Maybe," Bridge says, who hadn't figured that part out yet except now he had. "Books are awesome."

"But you can't eat them."

"You could if you're a bookworm," Bridge points out. "But there's not really any such thing as an actual insect that eats books, technically. So maybe not. But you can eat *while* reading a book!"

"If it printed books on rice paper you could read 'em, then eat 'em!"

"...But then what if you wanted to reread them later?"

Xander hits the obvious immediate suggestion, then makes a face without answering.

"Yeah, can we rewind the conversation back to before we were talking about eating books? Which Willow and Rory would burn me at the stake for anyway."

"Yeah," Bridge says, frowning slightly. "Rory left today," he adds glumly.

Xander nods. "Yeah, I stopped by to see her earlier."

"I hate this time of year kind of a lot," Bridge admits. The beginning of summer hadn't been fun either, really, but the end of summer was worse.

It's been a long time since Xander needed to hate this time of year, but that doesn't mean he's forgotten it. "I'm starting to remember why, yeah."

"I. Um. Do you mind if I stay here, tonight?" Bridge asks, halfheartedly poking at a few buttons on the food synthesizer. He's pretty sure Xander wouldn't *mind*, but then again he'd been over kind of a lot recently, due to excessive rule-breaking.

"No. Why would I?" Xander wanders over to look over his shoulder at the machine. "Nobody's gonna cast spells at you for it now."

"Well, I've been staying over a lot," Bridge points out. "I thought maybe you might be tired of always having me around, or something."

Xander snorts, but slips an arm over Bridge's shoulder from behind. "Ask me again when I get caught up for missing the last six years."

"Okay," Bridge says, leaning back against Xander. "But if you can put up with me for six years that might just mean you're stuck with me forever."

A couple really, really stupid responses having to do with how long forever tends to be in the place he grew up roll through Xander's head and make him feel older than he is. He doesn't say any of them.

"Oh no. Fate worse than brussels sprouts!" he says instead. Because he's mature like that.
