MCA Roof: Friday Night

Not that he had a problem with guests or he wouldn't have asked them to stay in the first place, but sometimes you needed to just get out and clear your head, which was why Xander was up on the roof, staring out at the town.

After what Angelus had done to Willow, Claire and Veronica, asking Mel not to kill him had been.....he really didn't want to think about what it had been, actually. Xanders traditionally attempt to avoid this thing called "self-examination." Worrying about other people is so much more fun. Oh wait, no. But at least he could distract himself by doing something useful. Sort of. Except that despite the fact that he and Dawn had the Best. Slayer. Ever.*, Willow was still asleep, so right now he wasn't feeling all that useful. Mostly just cold.

Yeah, that head-clearing thing was working out really well.

Xander turned around and grinned. "Afraid I'll fall off?"

Mel shrugged and took a seat on the roof. "Well I can't get a hold of Dawn anywhere. Last thing I need is for another watcher to fall of the end of the earth. You all right?"

Xander, who'd been leaning on the wall, sat down beside her. "Me? Fine. I'm more worried about Willow. Either of 'em - can't get through to mine, either."

Mel nodded. "Been a pretty sucky week for us all around hasn't it?"

"Well, some of us kicked major undead ass," Xander replied with a proud smile.

Mel smirked a little at that. "Well it wasn't his ass that I actually kicked. It was actually on the other side."

"...I love you. In non-inappropriate ways."

"Careful. Bridge might get jealous."

"That's why I specified!"

"Point made," Mel said stretching slightly. "So have the doctor's said anything about Willow waking up soon?"

Xander shook his head. "Not to me. Or around me. Or anyplace near any NPC nurse I could badger into talking to me."

Mel frowned. "Well at least no one else was hurt."

For varying definitions of that, Xander thought, flashing to Veronica and Claire. He peered over the roof-wall for a bit, then looked up. "What about you. You okay with this?"

"I'd felt a lot better if he were dust than just standing in a jail cell," Mel said honestly. "But you guys know him or whatever he is better than I do. After everything that's happened I'm not sure if I can believe that anything can really change a person."

"I...get that, yeah. I didn't use to think so either." Xander rested his arms on his knees, and his chin on his arms. "You know Faith, right? She changed."

"Yeah but how much did it take to change her?" Mel asked bitterly. "You can't wake up one day and be a new person."

"I don't think that's what happens with Angel, exactly." Not that he appreciated having to think about what happens with Angel, but he'd been doing it a lot this week. He'd had to. "I think it's more like you have an asshole roommate -- kinda been there -- who looks just like you and reads your diary all the time, and then you get kidnapped and he goes walking around pretending to be you."

Mel might have twitched slightly at the word "roommate". "Considering the amount of doppelgangers on this island I'd be surprised if that hasn't happened yet," Mel said quietly.

"It might've," Xander agreed, noticing the might-have-twitch but not sure if he should poke. "Most of the not-twin people I know've been okay types, though."
