MCA Holosuite, Thursday Afternoon

Before heading off to John and Aeryn's engagement party later that night, Xander was sitting inside the open doorway, the room itself not powered up, running through the list of sequences - the non-dirty ones, kthx - on the screen of his laptop. He wondered if it'd actually be possible to adapt some of the movie-related ones to fight scenarios for Mel; at least they got the gore-levels right in some of them, even if the dialogue left a little to be desired...

"What?" Mel said trying to read Xander's expression. "What'd I do wrong?"

Xander shook his head. "I wouldn't say wrong, just maybe wrong-time, wrong-place? I'm gonna guess when you hunted vampires back home, you didn't have to worry about people noticing?"

"People tend to run whenever the lurks show up," Mel said looking at the holographic people staring at her.

She glared back. Maybe hoping for a fight.

"I didn't think people would be this stupid about getting their blood sucked out."

"Most people don't believe in vampires. Well, most people not in Fandom. Vamps these days pretend to be human if they're in a crowd. Sneak in and grab somebody."

"Huh," Mel said looking around the bronze. "So where else can I find a ton of lurks to beat the crap out of."

"Well, there's always the Old Abandoned Flame Factory warehouse district. They tend to nest there." Xander glanced around the room. "Assuming this program has a warehouse district." He looked over at her. "Really one of those days, huh?"

"Got a voicemail from Harth," Mel said quietly before heading for the door. "So yeah. Bad day."

Xander frowned, casting a final look at the familiar-but-gone image of the Bronze before following her out. "Gotta say I'm not thrilled that evil seems to be better at folding, spindling and mutilating the space-time continuum than we are."

"He always was a know-it-all," Mel grumbled.

"Feel like telling me what he said?" Xander asked, guessing that if it had been a threat of imminent danger, he'd have heard about it before now.

Mel paused for a second before replying. "He asked if I liked his gift," she said. "Then made threats about hurting my friends."

Or he could be wrong. Xander's voice hardened. "Not gonna happen."

"Yeah. I know," Mel said. "But he's my brother. Or was. He still knows all the right buttons to push."

"Family'll do that," Xander agreed. "Hence my current policy of Avoid if at all possible with mine."

"Your family have vampires too?"

"Amazingly no, considering the number of times my dad must've walked home drunk through this town. We just have taxidermists."

"Is that like a mutant accountant?"

"It's like a guy who stuffs and mounts dead animals."

Apparently Mel is taking the term "Stuff and Mount" in a different manner than what Taxidermists actually do.

"Uh. Huh."

"And then hangs them on the wall. Or, y'know, gives 'em back to their owners so they can hang them on the wall."

"The owners want their animals back after they've been mounted and stuffed?"

"Well, usually. They probably wouldn't pay him to do it otherwise."

"I always kinda thought so. Then again, as a guy who dated a mummy, I guess I can't exactly talk."
