hasaknightjob: Steven gift shop (Steven gift shop)

It had been a pleasant week all told. Steven and Llewellyn had spent Steven's birthday with a nice dinner, a show, and time in a lovely hotel. And of course the night before that Llewellyn and Marc had done what was their tradition of coincidentally doing something that had nothing to do with what was happening the next day.

41 years now. At least by the reckoning of calendars and the year back home, which was what Marc and Steven went by since, well, it was their home. It was the amount of chronological time the body had existed at the very least. Steven tried not to linger on the question of how long he -

Well, again, he tried not to linger.

In any event, it had been a pleasant birthday earlier in the week and now he was back at work and happy to be so. All told it wasn't what he would have pictured for himself if you'd asked him as a child what his life would look like at this age. But it was the life he had and it had many things in it that he appreciated. Who could want more than that?

The contentment was why Steven was humming songs to himself - ones from the symphony he and Llewellyn had seen - as he worked. He was interruptible for visitors, of course.

Class met in the Danger Shop today, which was modified to resemble a pool hall.

"Welcome to the unofficial Land of the Hustle," Constantine proclaimed, spreading his arms wide. "Today, we're learning how to shoot pool and take the money of idiots with more money than sense."

"Pool hustlers use deception and misdirection in order to win cash from inexperienced players -- or from skilled players inexperienced with the world of hustling. Now, there's a few different options for a skilled hustler, and some things to watch out for if you don't want to end up the wrong side of the bet."

"A hustler will usually play with a low-quality 'house' cue stick provided by the pool hall, or an unadorned but high-quality personal cue that looks like one, known as a 'sneaky pete.' Or, with the nascence of local competitive league play in recent years, may play with a flashy-looking but evidently low-end personal cue, to give the impression that the hustler is a beginning league player. They will typically play a game or two for 'fun' or for low bets -- a beer or equivalent amount of cash -- in order to check out the opponent and give the impression that money can easily be won, often losing on purpose with the intent of winning a much larger wager later against a predictably overconfident opponent. This is known as sandbagging or dumping."

"They will pocket some difficult and impressive shots or make surprisingly secure safety shots, the ones crucial for winning, while missing many simple ones, thus making early victories appear to be sheer luck and may pretend to be intoxicated, unintelligent, or otherwise impaired. When betting on trick shots, they may intentionally miss the first or several times and lose a small amount, then raise the bet to an amount well beyond the loss and succeed at the well-practiced feat."

"Many of these ploys can easily be mistaken for the honest faults of a less-than-exceptional player. The engendered doubt and uncertainty is what allows hustling to succeed, with the 'mistakes' ceasing when a significant amount of money is at stake."

"Americans are partial to Eight-ball, so we'll start with that," he said, handwavily going over the rules. "So grab a partner, and work on your game."

The projector was set up in the classroom today, which could only mean one thing.

"Creative writing actually take many forms," Aphra told the class as she looked for the remote, which you'd think she wouldn't have lost track of in five minutes, but you'd be surprised.

"I'm extremely fond of dirty limericks myself," Isabela said, surprising absolutely no one. "Which is why we'll be watching a film about a famous poet."

So many notes today. I like it better when Wednesday mornings are short but…I suppose this will keep me busy for a bit.

So. Yesterday was much busier than usual but classes were mostly the same at the school. There were no teachers for Ethics and a movie for Basic Training.

Still nothing from the dorms but the porg helped with the party, it seems. That’s good. There is so much from the party and it makes him happy to be useful.

So, on to the town. Most things happened at Caritas but Sairis was selling charms at Liliana’s shop.

Everything else happened at Kitty’s Icebreaker Party which only had ice in the drinks. I think.

There were specials at the bar. Caleb, Flint, Henry, Henry, Arden, Adrian’s cat Boston (or is Adrian Boston’s person?), Jon, and Raiden all got drinks. Steve and Bucky discussed dinosaurs and the squirrels are snickering at that. Pam had a drink and talked to Rey about not playing the game and Adrian about swamps and groves. Liliana had a lovely dress which Jon noticed before discussing the trip. Sairis didn’t even make it into the back room before Harley wanted to know what squares he could fill.

And then there was the game where we all tried to fill our cards, with varying success.

So much icebreaking bingo )

Does anyone like the cold? Kitty, why did you put that on the card? Did you know nobody would ever be able to mark off that space?

Right. Well. That was a lot of notes and I’m going to get a coffee now. But perhaps we ought to do something similar sometime in the future.

I hope you all enjoy your Wednesdays.
