200 years in the future, give or take a year, Melaka Fray was standing on the highest point of Haddyn.
Or rather, what was left of it.
It started off small. She didn't notice anything at first until it was too late. She had just assumed that the marker she left at Loo's grave had been stolen or destroyed. She didn't question it when Gunther's bodyguard had just disappeared; after all, body guards were a dime a dozen.
But then Loo's parents disappeared. And then one day the booze hall she frequented was gone. And then it was Gates the Spider-Monkey.
What followed was search through the remains of the Watcher library until...
Mel closed her eyes and clenched her fists.
She could hardly blame herself for Sokka being gone. But she did.
When she opened her eyes she could see the horizon disappearing along with the buildings, the flying cars, the lurks and people below.
Some slayer. Some protector of the world she turned out to be.
She pulled out her phone and tried the first number on her list. It had been a long time since called it and she doubted it would work but somehow it made a connection. Why wouldn't it? It was a twinkie phone after all.
"Harris? It's Mel."
There was a long pause before she said anything else.
"I failed Xander. The world is just... disappearing. Gone. I'm watching it get closer as I talk to you. It started with people and certain places just vanishing and now it's just everything. Jesu. I'm sorry Xander. I should have done something. I wish I had. Some slayer I turned out to be huh? I thought I could start things over but it turns out I'm going to be the last slayer. Sucks so hard."
There was something that sounded like a choked back sob but that wouldn't Mel's style.
"I don't have much time. Tell Rikku to eat a chimi for me. Tell Dawn she better be a kick ass watcher or I'll come back and haunt her. Tell Zuko... tell him I hope he found what he was looking for."
And finally there was one more sigh.
"It's here, Harris. You were the best watcher I could have ever asked for. Granted the other ones I met set themselves on fire but you were always rocketship in my book. I'll-"
