See, now there was a response he didn't expect either. Although it at least fell within his experience.

"Kyle. No last name." He smiled into the phone. "She's fine. Probably throwing a tantrum in that apartment she shares with the geeky guy and the girl with the multiple hair colors. For now. I need information though, and you, Mr. Xander Harris Carson, are my point of validation."

The name wasn't a surprise, not if he had Parker's phone. The last bit was, though. "I should tell you what and why?"

"Do you know where Jarod is? And do you know if Miss Parker would know?"

Said dead calm, trying to disguise how very very important this was to him.

"He's my brother," Kyle spit out. "I have a right to know where he is! And if he's locked up I'm going to go get him out!"

Okay, one round of Unexpected to the new guy. "Your brother? Geez, you people are big on the siblings crawling out of the woodwork."

"What?" Kyle paused, then shook his head. "That's what happens when you're kidnapped out of pre-school. Last time I saw him was three years ago, and I wasn't even sure he made it, and then suddenly, I'm in L.A., and there's Miss Parker." He spit the words out with venom. "When she should be in Blue Cove or Harvard or where the hell ever. And she says she has his e-mail?"

"If she says so, she probably does." Unlike years ago - for him - it wasn't exactly a secret that Jarod wasn't at the Centre anymore, so Xander didn't feel he was giving anything away by saying, "Far as I know he's not locked up anyplace; hasn't been for a while now. I really don't know where he is, though."

And he really wouldn't say if he did, not when the guy was trying to keep not just himself but a little girl out of the hands of the same people Parker had walked away from in disgust.

Kyle paced the length of his hotel room, then finally asked, "You would really call her honest? She's not with them, with her father?"

And if that e-mail really lead him to Jarod....

And if this guy was one of her father's people, checking up on just that question? Yeahno.

"I'd trust her with my life. I'd trust her with my kid's life." When, you know. He had one.

The father part, he didn't answer at all.

And that shook Kyle enough to make his head hurt.

"Right." And after a second, "You won't be hearing from me again, Mr. Carson." And then more lightly, "Especially not after that thing with the glitter and the stripper and the banana cream. Jeez."
