The irony was, if Kyle had any idea what Xander was talking about, he'd have gotten it in a heartbeat. Who did this guy think he was? Some boyfriend of Parker's?
"...about the same as if it were me. I guess." Whatever that was.
"I think the day you start asking me to call you Miss Parker is the day we come over there to hold an intervention involving a gremlin, a bucket of glitter, three banana cream pies and the Mountie doing a pole dance to It's Raining Men and you're not Parker, are you."
He might take his time, but he did tend to finally get there. Usually.
"... never so glad for that to be true as at this moment, dude."
Ow ow ow ow ow maybe electroshock will get that image out of his head? He used to like electroshock, some days. Not that he understood half of it. Maybe this guy needs the electroshock?
See, now there was a response he didn't expect either. Although it at least fell within his experience.
"Kyle. No last name." He smiled into the phone. "She's fine. Probably throwing a tantrum in that apartment she shares with the geeky guy and the girl with the multiple hair colors. For now. I need information though, and you, Mr. Xander Harris Carson, are my point of validation."
"What?" Kyle paused, then shook his head. "That's what happens when you're kidnapped out of pre-school. Last time I saw him was three years ago, and I wasn't even sure he made it, and then suddenly, I'm in L.A., and there's Miss Parker." He spit the words out with venom. "When she should be in Blue Cove or Harvard or where the hell ever. And she says she has his e-mail?"
"If she says so, she probably does." Unlike years ago - for him - it wasn't exactly a secret that Jarod wasn't at the Centre anymore, so Xander didn't feel he was giving anything away by saying, "Far as I know he's not locked up anyplace; hasn't been for a while now. I really don't know where he is, though."
And he really wouldn't say if he did, not when the guy was trying to keep not just himself but a little girl out of the hands of the same people Parker had walked away from in disgust.
"Right." And after a second, "You won't be hearing from me again, Mr. Carson." And then more lightly, "Especially not after that thing with the glitter and the stripper and the banana cream. Jeez."
200 years in the future, give or take a year, Melaka Fray was standing on the highest point of Haddyn.
Or rather, what was left of it.
It started off small. She didn't notice anything at first until it was too late. She had just assumed that the marker she left at Loo's grave had been stolen or destroyed. She didn't question it when Gunther's bodyguard had just disappeared; after all, body guards were a dime a dozen.
But then Loo's parents disappeared. And then one day the booze hall she frequented was gone. And then it was Gates the Spider-Monkey.
What followed was search through the remains of the Watcher library until...
Mel closed her eyes and clenched her fists.
She could hardly blame herself for Sokka being gone. But she did.
When she opened her eyes she could see the horizon disappearing along with the buildings, the flying cars, the lurks and people below.
Some slayer. Some protector of the world she turned out to be.
She pulled out her phone and tried the first number on her list. It had been a long time since called it and she doubted it would work but somehow it made a connection. Why wouldn't it? It was a twinkie phone after all.
"Harris? It's Mel."
There was a long pause before she said anything else.
"I failed Xander. The world is just... disappearing. Gone. I'm watching it get closer as I talk to you. It started with people and certain places just vanishing and now it's just everything. Jesu. I'm sorry Xander. I should have done something. I wish I had. Some slayer I turned out to be huh? I thought I could start things over but it turns out I'm going to be the last slayer. Sucks so hard."
There was something that sounded like a choked back sob but that wouldn't Mel's style.
"I don't have much time. Tell Rikku to eat a chimi for me. Tell Dawn she better be a kick ass watcher or I'll come back and haunt her. Tell Zuko... tell him I hope he found what he was looking for."
And finally there was one more sigh.
"It's here, Harris. You were the best watcher I could have ever asked for. Granted the other ones I met set themselves on fire but you were always rocketship in my book. I'll-"
The world was back and so was Mel. And she was ecstatic.
"I don't know if it was you or someone else, Harris, but it looks like today is my lucky day. My world is back and so am I. Lurks better get out of my rutting way or they are dust."
There was a little chuckle.
"Looks like I won't be the last slayer after all. I love you Xander. I'll make you proud. But right now I'm going to find Sokka and screw until he can't walk."
