Xander's room at the Arms Hotel, Friday morning

You'd think after last night, Xander would be sleeping in, and he did try, but he woke sometime long before he felt really rested. Rather than stare at the ceiling until it was a decent hour to call...people, he got up, showered, and did stuff that wouldn't wake anybody up who wasn't already awake.

It was hella later in Brazil, so he did try to call there, but he was met only with Kennedy's apologetic voice. He left a message for Willow with her and a Happy Birthday one on Buffy's cell, then went back to peering at his laptop. Noting the number of truly new e-mails that had already come in, he decided the old ones could wait until he'd saved everybody some WTF.

Sorry about the clogged inboxes, guys. And the five months without writing or calling. And the wacky messages about stuff that hasn't happened yet - it's been a little longer than five months for me, so I kind of... extrapolated. They're not psychic predictions or anything, so don't set up an armed guard around the Perk, Jake. Anyway, I'm in Fandom, up at the Arms, and the phone and the e-mail actually work now. It's been kind of crazy since I got here - sorry it took me this long to let people know I'm around, too. I'm just now starting to believe it myself, y'know?

Then and only then did he let himself read through the messages he'd been sent while he was gone, with the cellphone on hands-free so he could finally listen to the rest of his voicemail while he read.

When the last 'old' message started playing, though, Xander lifted his gaze from the screen and just stared. And then made a call it was always going to be too early to make.

When three hours had passed with no response, he made another. ~~Which was ALWAYS a link, yes.~~

The desk clerk was kind enough to transfer Isabel's call to the phone in Xander's room.

The phone that rang wasn't the one he was listening for - it just...rang, instead of playing a Simon and Garfunkel song, for one thing - but Xander picked it up anyway.

"Bridge?"

Bit of a one-track mind at the moment, yes.

"Umm..no," Isabel said. "Just me. Hi stranger." And then she thought about the dates on the emails and Xander's latest message. "It's Isabel."

He relaxed a little, and a smile spread across his face. That wasn't a voice he was likely to forget, even without having heard another version of it since the last time he'd talked to her. "Hey, roomie."

And boy, did just saying those words feel strange, wrong and right at the same time.

Isabel laughed a bit at that. "I still haven't gotten a new one. If they didn't have those pesky rules about non-students in the dorms I'd be offering you your old bed back. I've missed you Xander."

"The room here's nice - and somebody else is paying for it, which automatically makes the pillows softer - but it definitely lacks something. Possibly muppet chickens." Xander leaned back in his chair. "I missed you too."

"But the thing is, are there chocolates on the pillow? You need that pre-sleep sugar fix." Isabel hopped up on the counter and crossed her legs. "We haven't had muppet chickens, but we have had obnoxious misletoe, attacking books, some odd lemming like creatures. And then there were trolls. I'm blaming you for that."

"How do I get the blame for trolls? I wasn't even here!" Leaning back in his chair, yes, but the cellphone was on his knee, and he glanced down every so often, as if staring at it might make it ring.

"It's like Cam with the Jello Dragons. You mentioned them in an email," she said. "That's enough of a reason." Her voice softened, "How are you? Surprised to be back?"

"I think I surprised zoomed past me going 90 miles an hour down the causeway to the mainland right about the time I got out of the car and realized we'd just crossed it."

"So pretty much past surprised and into gob-smacked, I'd love to see that expression but between class, StuCo and being on library detail...Well that's why I'm here right now and not tackle hugging you in your hotel room," Isabel admitted.

"I've been kind of sticking around here waiting for a call," Xander told her. Because it wasn't remotely obvious given how he'd answered the phone, no.

She nodded, then realized that Xander couldn't see that. "I see. Will you still be waiting for a call next week? Or can we make plans for lunch one day? My treat. The best baked goods J,GoB has to offer."

"Oh God, J,GoB. Or oh Jeff, I guess. I haven't thought about that place in forever." Xander glanced at his cell again. "I sure as hell hope I won't still be waiting."

"Good. Then pick a day, any day and let me know. I'll be there with bells on. And you better be prepared for tackling," Isabel laughed. "Is anything wrong? Anything I can do?"

It couldn't hurt to ask. Clearly she'd meant her message to be private, but given the subject matter.... "Have you heard from Callisto lately? Or anything about her at all?"

"I was out there over the holidays. She wasn't doing well," Isabel said.

"She didn't sound too good on the voicemail she left for me last week," he replied, not going into more detail than he had to; he figured he could give Callisto that much, at this point.

Mentally Isabel cursed Logan yet again. "Hopefully she'll okay. I'm sure hearing you're back in touch is going to help."

"Hearing from Bridge is what she needs, I think." Hopefully she was in a condition to be able to. "I left him a message; that's why I guessed it was him when I answered."

"He could be in class?" she suggested. "But I'm sure he'll call soon. I'm sure you guys will have a lot to talk about." Like the whole he's dating Rory thing.

"Little bit, yeah," Xander answered with a short, slightly tense laugh. "Plus there's always the weather."

"Which has been decidedly weird enough that yeah, hours of conversation. So tell me, what have you been doing since Sunnydale went boom?"

"Tracking down new Slayers, mostly. Which... is probably a longer story than you want to hear over the phone. That'd be a coffee story." Possibly a coffee with booze story, especially considering people he'd met right before Sunnydale went boom. "And cleaning up after 'em. Rebuilding when they end up godzillaing through a town."

"We could have used you here in town after the trolls. Hell stick around till the next invasion. I'm sure there'll be plenty of work for you," Isabel pointed out. "Have you talked to Dawn yet?"

"I tried her cell but she must've been in class; I think she's got Ancient Greek on Friday mornings and you totally mean the Dawn here, don't you."

"That I do. I think she's worried your going to hate her or something."

"...Why on earth would I do that?"

"I don't know exactly. Timeline stuff I think. But talk to her soon."

"I was planning on it, yeah. Tomorrow if I can't get down into town today."

"Good. We've both missed you lots."

~~Where? Did I miss something while I was being a bitchy ho?~~

"Trust me, you have no idea how good it is to hear your voice." Even if he had heard it more recently than others, it wasn't the same.

"I'm sure. The only thing that'll be better then hearing your voice is a giving you a hug. Be prepared for tackling," she smiled into the phone.

"I'll order my puffy-Xander sparring suit in, just in case," he said.

"Oh come on. I won't hurt you. But for now, why don't I let you get back to doing whatever it is you doing. Call me when you want to go for food?"

"Will do," Xander replied. Not remotely still staring at the other phone except yes.

"I'll do that. I'll do that. Definitely. Bye Xander."
